The communal garden: realistic maintenance for small budgets

The garden is the first thing people see and the first thing to be abandoned when the budget tightens. There is a middle ground.

The numbers of the classic garden

Professional maintenance of a small communal garden (lawn, hedges, irrigation): €100–300 a month depending on size and frequency. The lawn is the expensive part: water, frequent mowing, feeding, reseeding.

The alternative: redesign to maintain less

The trend that makes complete sense for communities:

• Less lawn, more Mediterranean shrubs and ground cover (rosemary, lavender, grasses): a fraction of the water and the hours.
• Drip irrigation with a timer instead of sprinklers: 40–60% less water and fewer bald patches.
• Gravel or decorative bark in the impossible corners.

A redesign like that pays for itself in two to four years on water and gardening hours alone — and usually looks better.

The gardening contract, properly specified

Frequencies by season (the garden does not need the same in January as in May), tasks listed (mowing, hedges, treatments, leaf clearing IN autumn), and who replaces plants that die. The monthly visit "for whatever fits in the time" is the recipe for a sad garden.

And the participatory corner

A small vegetable or herb patch run by volunteer residents costs nothing and genuinely builds community. A simple internal rule and off you go: buildings where neighbours get their hands dirty together argue less at meetings.
