The community WhatsApp group: why it catches fire and how to put it out
Every building has the group. And every community row of the last decade has passed through it.
Why it catches fire
- It mixes everything: the urgent leak, the parcel from the courier, the meme and the argument — all at the same priority.
- Nothing survives: the agreement from 40 days ago is buried under 900 messages.
- It gets misread: a tone written in the heat of the moment, read by 14 people, escalates on its own.
- It excludes: there are always residents outside it (older people, newcomers, the ones who muted it forever).
Survival rules (if you keep it)
- Notices and practical information only; debates go to the meeting.
- No decisions: the group does not vote — what is "agreed" there does not exist.
- Personal conflicts, in private. Always.
What to take out of the group NOW
- Official notices: onto a board that stays and can be consulted.
- Incidents: into a log with a status (open / in progress / resolved) — "I put it in the group" is not a report.
- Documents: minutes and invoices buried in a chat are lost documents.
- The accounts: they are never discussed well in a chat.
